5 Things I will Miss About ATL: #1 Elizabeth Baptist Church

I can't remember a time growing up when church wasn't a constant. There was always two services on Sunday and bible class on Wednesday. Vacation Bible School every summer and once I was a teenager there were the weeklong camps held at universities across the country.

During college my attendence dwindled, but it wasn't until I was an adult when I realized how important spiritual fullfilment was to my life. I discovered this with the help of Metropolitan Baptist Church, which I am excited to finally be returning to.

But after visiting countless churches here in Atlanta, it was only Elizabeth Baptist Church that fed my soul and not only had me eager to return, but had me telling everyone about it. It is truly a unique worshiping experience. It is everything that I enjoy... a good message, uplifting singing (even from the Mens Choir... which tend to be dull and boring), and a timely service. But the thing that suprises me the most about the multigenerational EBC, is how the service and church are led by quite a youthful staff. Craig L. Oliver the pastor is in his mid 30s, and the ministerial staff that I have had the opportunity to see when Oliver was away have all been in their early 20s. When I asked one of the elder members I sat next to one Sunday, she simplied replied "it is a beautiful thing to see the young folks so active nowdays". Inspring as well, if you ask me.

For anyone looking for a church experience, I highly recommend checking this church out. You can watch the services live or On Demand at Streamingfaith.com. It will definitely be apart of any of my weekend trips to ATL.

GoGo'n Home

My return to Atlanta has been filled with many ups and downs. This past year and some months have definitely been a learning experience about myself, my strength, and my faith in God.

For those who have no clue to what I am talking about you may want to pause here and go back and read this entry from New Years Eve. (reference: Lessons Learned in 2006)

In June, I was approached about a management level position in my field that would afford me all the opportunity and challenges my current position seriously lacks. On August 1st, after a couple interviews and several conversations with my 4 trusted voices (my 2 bestfriends Karlo and Rey, my attorney and friend Cyn, & my colleague and good friend, Micah) I decided to take this position which will require me to return to DC. While I am disheartened that I didn't get the opportunity to accomplish all of the things I had hoped and dreamed for my time in Atlanta... I am looking forward to my return to the Nation's Capital, to my friends, to those last minute trips to NYC, and the new opportunities and challenges before me.

One month from today I embark on a new career voyage... Keep me and my decisions in your thoughts and prayers because I am go go'n home.

The Value of Life

When I heard the news teaser about an upcoming story of students shot execution style.. I shook my head but kept it moving. Then after flipping the channels I happened to land back on the NBC station just as the story was coming back on. I wasn't surprised to learn this tragedy happened in a city where gun violence has become more common and a part of daily life than Starbucks in Seattle. Four young friends shot execution-style in a schoolyard just days before they were to head to Deleware State University.

Forced against a wall at an elementary school and shot in the head at close range, these vicitims were thought to been a part of a random robbery committed by several assailants and that some of the victims may have tried to resist their attackers.

What type of callaous and cruel person could shoot someone in the head at close range? Even if I wasn't gravely afraid of guns... I don't think there is anything that could promote me to take someone's life other than saving my own.

Are we not teaching our children the value of life? Until we start holding parents responsible for the crimes of their children... this nonsense will continue. How is someone raised that they could do something like this? Where are our churches? What is the government doing? These senseless crimes continue but yet their focus is on Iraq. If we can't stop our own people from killing each other, why should we even be concerned about terrorism.

How did all of this start... When corpral punishment and prayer left the schools.... when children stopped being raised with religious/spiritual beliefs... when kids started having kids at profound rates???

that is only King James' VERSION

Once again I have revealed something that has left two of my friends speechless. The friends have known me for 10 and 5 years respectively but would have never guessed that what I exposed would ever come out of my mouth. For as long as they have known me they have seen me active at Metropolitan Baptist in DC and now faithfully attending Elizabeth Baptist here in Atlanta. But in a conversation this past Thursday with the 10 year friend and one this Saturday with the 5 year friend caught them both by total surprise when I stated, “ I have quite a few issues with the King James Version of the Bible and don’t really believe it for what it is supposed to be.”

My issues with this version first stemmed from school when we were studying the many Kings of England. This is where I learned that King James once studied and promoted witchcraft and showed very little interest in women but preferred the company of men. A few years ago I was exposed to Alister McGrath’s book, In the Beginning: The Story of the King James Bible and How it Changed a Nation, a Language, and a Culture. It was in this book where I learned that the legendary King James commissioned the translation of the Bible to conform to the Church of England. He also wanted any words that had different meanings, to be translated using whatever meaning “the most eminent fathers” used. Also instead of translating from an original Hebrew text, the KJV derives from the Geneva Bible and several other translations.
So basically you have a translation of a translation that isn’t even a literal translation.

In saying this doesn’t mean I think the KJV is just an incredible novella. But unfortunately since I can’t read Hebrew, I must hope and believe that the inspiration of the word of God is still there. And continue to read my Bible that has the KJV and the NIV side by side for comparison. (I am sure the NIV has issues with its translation as well).

Faith is the substance of things hope for, the evidence of things not seen.

Things I Wish Would Go Away Forever...

Mohawks... very few people can pull this hairstyle off successfully. But that doesn't stop people from allowing their friends going out looking fool. Diddy brought this hairstyle back in 2003... and since I have seen 2003 unsuccessful attempts.

Denim Shorts... They just never look good. My friend LB's Friday date made me think of this. Nice, attractive guy... but those shorts just looked like he was one of Theo Huxtable's friend.

Flava of Love Chicks... When MTV created Real World years ago... I am sure they didn't mean for just anyone to become overnight celebrities. We as a people accept about anything someone gives us, and I am tired of seeing these women who are infamous for being ghetto messes on my gossip web sites.

Usher & Tameka Foster... this whole nonsense has driven me to an all time high of annoyance. One thing Usher apparently didn't learn from Puffy was how to pimp the media. This entire story from beginning to the now cliffhanger has been quite annoying and pathetic. "Don't print stories about my fiancee" one minute and releasing soliloquies the next about their love... Dude please just make music.

Celeb Weddings... speaking of which I think celebs should be banned from getting married. I mean what is the point they usually last all of 10 minutes before they are divorcing. Never understood why actually getting married was so important... just shack up and when it goes down hill, grab your toothbrush and Gucci bag and beat it.

Supersize... damn this curse to my waist!!

Dreamgirls... back in Atlanta

Well if you were paying attention this past May I made a post entitled Poor Little Jennifer which was about Jennifer Holiday's return to the stage as Effie in the National Black Arts Festival's production of Dreamgirls. Well the show has been running for about a week and of course I wasn't going to spend my $40 to go see it but a good friend and blog reader did and sent me this review via email.

Me and Chris went to see Dreamgirls this past Saturday at the Fox and boy did you miss a show. From the time the curtains went up and Move, Move came on I knew this show was going to be nothing but comedy. Jennifer Holiday, the girl from En Vogue and some other chick took to the stage. When I tell you it looked like I was at the Jungle on Monday night, because those women looked like they were ready for the drag show. I have been to several Broadway shows and understand that the makeup and face expressions are supposed to be a little over dramatized but baby when I tell you Niesha Dupree ain't have nothing on Jen. Now I will say Jen belted out most of her tunes and got quite a few standing ovations but as you can imagine And I am Telling you was way over the top.... and her I am Changing was ummm a mess. Nothing about these 4 women trying to play young women just starting off was believeable at all. Anyway the show overall was ok, I think most people enjoyed it.

So maybe I will reconsider and check this out before it leaves Sunday... I could use a good laugh or 2.

Gabriel Kaine is working furiously to revive his stalled reporting career. Years ago, he got his first big break by investigating murders committed by a killer known as the Messiah. But when the Messiah vanished from the public six months ago, Gabriel's success hit a downward slope. Now the Messiah has returned, and no one is safe from his evil.

Desperate to bring this man to justice and to reap the professional reward for uncovering the final truth, Gabriel teams up with Jazz McKinney, the only known survivor of an encounter with the Messiah who was freed by the killer so he could warn others of the Messiah's impending return. But as Gabriel and Jazz come closer to discovering the Messiah's identity, Gabriel realizes all the evidence points to Dr. Garrett Lord - a respected doctor - and Gabriel's lover. The personal stakes have never been higher, and readers will be on the edge of their seats to see what awful truths are uncovered in this tale of misguided passion, deadly secrets, and thrilling danger.

The Laws: Why Did I Do That?

Have you ever been driving home (riding the train or the bus) from a jump off’s house that you met at the club, online, or if you are in Atlanta just about anywhere, and thought to yourself “Why the hell did I do that?”

Once again I was having a conversation with a friend. He called me as he was heading back to his side of Atlanta after a recent hook up with some random guy off Men4Now.com. When I picked up the phone obviously annoyed that he was interrupting my show, instead of an hello I got, “Why the fuck did I just do that?” He went into telling me how he had been talking to this guy online for the past few weeks and they finally decided to meet up and check the “vibe” (for those who do not know that is code for to see if you really look like or better than your picture) and “chill” (that is code for pretend to watch TV and be interested in your idle conversation and corny flirts for an hour… then have sex and leave immediately). He said the guy did look like his picture but his conversation was awful and there was no real attraction but they “messed” (code for I don’t want my friend to think less of me so I will just leave it at that) around anyway. He said the sex was mediocre and could have been better off saving his $2.95 a gallon and jacking off at home.

I am sure most people have had a similar experience. As of lately I have made a conscious effort to refrain from random jumpoffs, not that I think that I am above or denying the fact that I have in the past. It is just that I see that they are usually a waste of time and effort. For me this means the intensity and quantity of my self gratification has increased greatly. I can't even remember the last time I had sex... (damn i hope that didn't offend anyone with that one)

But my sure fire remedy if you don't have a consistent jumpoff and you think you will be tempted by getting online or going to the bar, is to satisfy that instant urge by handling it yourself... usually that will work for now unless you just have a high drive and if that's you, you need to invest in finding that one person in your black book you can always count on.

Today I have done very little other than laying in bed dozing in and out of sleep... watching reruns on tv... and taking two showers even though I have yet to leave my house. I think that I am resting mentally for what will be a very trying and difficult week.

Taking my truck to the body shop in the morning for the insurance rep to assess the damage and begin the repair process. I have never been in an auto accident in my own car so I am unsure of how this process will go and exactly how long I will be without her.

I also have to fly to DC to handle some personal business on Wednesday. The person that was supposed to come through and get me a buddy pass to fly has yet to come through. So as of Sunday at 8pm... I have no clue to how I am getting there.

One of my baby cousins that I grew up closely with and his girlfriend gave birth to a premature baby girl, McKenzy about a month ago. Saturday morning I got a phone call saying that Mac didn't make it. She was too weak and too small but she tried.

My job search is in high gear, while I enjoy my coworkers and my job for the most, I am not being challenged the way I like to be and I am definitely not being paid what I need to be. Since moving to Atlanta the job thing has been the only thing I have been unable to conquer... I never had these issues back in DC. But I will keep trying.

I am so unhappy with where life is for me at this moment. I am so far off my 10 year plan... but I am working to get back on track... please no sympathy just felt like ranting a little.....

The Laws: The Lay-A-Way Plan

So me and a new acquaintance were having a conversation last night about many things and of course our experiences dating was a part of that conversation.

He was telling me a story about his recent dating situations and how one person he was dating refused to tell him that he was dating other people as well. I commented that, "Oh he had you on the Lay A Way Plan". Which prompted me to have to explain:

The Lay A Way Plan is when you meet someone that you are really interested in. They are attractive, have things going for themselves, they make you happy, and you could see yourself dating them; however you are not ready to commit to just one person. So what you do is you date them from a distance. You hang out continuously and even spend evenings, nights, and weekends together. However you are still hanging out and meeting other people, while keeping that other person close enough to hopefully develop into something but far away enough to keep all commitments at bay for now.
The Lay-A-Way plan may work for some. But the problem with it is... that most of the times people don't want to admit they are on this plan and forget how small this world really is. It usually blows up in their face and they are left there looking like a scheming liar... when all of this could have been prevented by just saying, you are dating other people or committing.

But, at least in the gay community, people seem to subscribe to the whole grass is greener mentality. Someone may find someone who is quite a good match but yet not perfect... so you continue your quest for Mr./Mrs. Perfect, instead of working on and developing what you have into the perfect relationship. I am by no means saying that anyone should settle, but if the person is a good match but not perfect... maybe it is something that can be worked on or maybe it is you that is not perfect. God knows I have definitely been the imperfect one many times. And who ever said you are Mr./Mrs. Perfect's perfect match.

Being upfront and honest is the only sure way to maintain friendships and relationships. So if you got someone on the Lay-A-Way plan... be careful that this doesn't come back to bite you in the ass... you could miss out on something really good.

Weekend Wrapup

I don't even know where to begin. But this weekend... actually this past week has been quite busy and quite eventful. The last two weeks me and my close friends here have been focused on our friend JB, that left Sunday afternoon on his way to Baghdad, Iraq to work as a contractor in the Green Zone. So since it was our last time hanging out till New Years... we have been partying and hanging hard for the past two weeks.

Friday night the plan was to venture out to a party at the Loft and then on to Towers 2... however we unfortunately never made it to the Loft cause we had a very unfortunate accident in my Montero. After a little crying on Spring Street (maybe that was just me), we eventually pulled it together and made it to Towers. After a few drinks, a lot of sweating on the dance floor... we closed the club, got a lil chicken and hit it home. Of course I avoided looking at the back of my truck... a few phone calls later to Geico and Atlanta Police... I finally got in bed around 7 am.

Saturday we had an afternoon cookout by the pool for JB. An intimate crowd allowed people to really let go and have fun... of course the bar by the pool had no less than 20 bottles which helped as well. I was quite surprised that everyone except a five people got into the pool. Some even left and came back in swim gear, because they were surprised people were actually swimming at a pool party. I invited Monet to come to the party and he showed up right on time, ready for the pool. After pulling me into the pool, fully clothed, he then began to strip me down to my swim trunks that I was having second thoughts about already. But he definitely made it up to me as we then swam around the pool in each others arms kissing and carrying on. At the time I didn't know exactly how so... but Roddy made sure he got it on video. (mental note seek and destroy that damn video)

After hours of drinking and swimming... the party continued inside. More alcohol... some herbal refreshments... led the kids to reenact the Destiny's Child Farewell Concert. As me and a new friend stood out on the patio talking about our childhood's in Texas and new lifes here in Atlanta we could do nothing but laugh because we were definitely getting a comedy show inside. We eventually made it to an all white party in Midtown... but we were so drained from the days activities that we really couldn't enjoy it and left not long after getting there, all going in our own directions... let's say Monet is a true masterpiece up close and personal.

Sunday was very chill... I spent some time with Roddy and JB before he left for the airport and the rest of the day in bed watching Fame and dozing in and out of sleep. A very eventful weekend and sad at the same time... Montero is bruised and damaged. JB is gone till New Years.

Random Thoughts this Holiday...

- So not only is today the America's Independence but it is also would have been my parent's anniversary... and as I near 30 (shivers at the thought) , I have no idea how my parents met or any clue about their courtship. My parents separated when I was really young and my father died while I was in elementary school... and no one ever talks about it.

- Why does this dude I know in New York have to bring up his fraternity in every conversation. At 30yo, he lets Alpha Phi Alpha define his existence and it is beginning to annoy me and other mutual friends. Like dude please talk about something else... anything else. Not a good look.

- So after playing coy on the Wendy Williams Experience, Laylene didn't even win Monique's Charm School but Safari, the girl with the Kool Aid hair did. With a name and hair like that I hope the show actually did some good.... wait... better thought, why am I even thinking about this when I don't even watch the show regularly.

- I am so excited about my boy, Lee Haye's new book The Messiah which drops on Tuesday, July 24. If you haven't read his books Passion Marks and A Deeper Blue, you are definitely missing out.

- Why am I feeling that it is taking more energy than necessary to be cordial to someone when I see them out, because they do not really care for my friends. Especially since we haven't had much interaction since a year ago this time, his choice... I am cool with a hello in passing and keep it moving. Why do we have to fake like we care how one another has been doing? I am sure you don't really care about what is going on in my life cause if you did things wouldn't be the way they are.

- Speaking of which... why do people that are in their mid 20s and beyond still have high school ass attitudes towards people. The whole "You stole my friend... man.. yadda" "He is dating my ex" bullshit is so tired and corny. No one deserves that much energy.

- I need a vacation from friends, family, foes, work, email, and everything else... what I wouldn't do for 7 days on a beach in the Caribbean where no one knows me, with my journal, Ipod, and a margarita. Someone send me a buddy pass and some hotel points!!

- People annoy me...

Man Attempts to Steal iPhone...

The Return of Making the Flop

Well if you were like me the return of MTV's Making the Band snuck up and premeired and you were none the wisest. The only reason that I knew it was even coming on soon was the coverage of one of my favorite celebrities, Sean John Combs throwing a chair at choreogapher Laurie Ann. (did she not turn it in that blue unitard and fishnets... OW!)

Well a couple days late, courtesy of Comcast DVR, I caught the first show and the prevelance of mediorce talent often displayed on this and other reality shows. Unlike some of my friends the show is exactly what I expected. Hopefully none of these fellas actually think they are going to be the next New Edition... i mean I really hope they don't think this show is even about them and their struggles. This like any other Bad Boy venture is about Sean Combs. Yes the person whose only real hit in the past few years is a top selling fragrance but yet remains to stay relevant. (which is why I love him so much... dude is gifted)

Anyway watching these guys battle it out to be the next O Town or Danity Kane will at least give me something to watch during the summer reruns. And there are a few cuties that I wouldn't mind knowing more about (dude in the skully in the pic is ummm... ooo) And I will admit I am interested in knowing how long Chris, the dancer that can't sing to save his life, and the big boy, who had 2 grilled cheese sandwiches for breakfast, will last.

So Mondays at 10pm est, I will be watching Diddy's dream team which is comprised of New Edition's Michael Bivins, Grammy-winning producer Bryan Cox, R&B singer Joe, A&R manager how u doin Slam, vocal coach Ankh Ra and choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson, manager Johnny Wright, and singer/producer Mario Winans (where the hell you been), put together as the website says 'the perfect R&B boy band to follow in the footsteps of such legendary acts as The Temptations, Boyz II Men, New Edition and NSync.'

Lauryn on the Comeback!!

Why thoughts of Jackie Washington are running through my head I have no clue but on to today's post...

So Sony records spoke with MTV News and has stated that

But, as her reps optimistically pointed out to MTV News, Hill has recently gone
back into the studio with the goal of making a new LP. In all seriousness, they
say. She theoretically has a library of unreleased material in the vault, since
she has consistently recorded over the past decade (we just haven't heard
anything yet). But the hip-hop star's camp says Hill has cooked up a batch of
fresh new material and there will probably be some collaborations once the
project is finally released.
No one can deny the masterpiece that was The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Released in August of 1998, this cd garnered 11 Grammy nominations and walked away with 5 of the golden statues. I bought not only one but two copies of this cd... one for the house and one for the car. Miseducation was on constant rotation in my cd player for over a year and remains one of the few cds that I can listen to the entire way through.

In 2001, Lauryn and MTV released MTV Unplugged No. 2.0. While the cd's material was amazing her raspy, soar throat voice killed the album for me. But regardless of my and other's critical reception of the album, the cd still went platinum. Pretty amazing seeing it got relatively no airplay.

So what does Lauryn have in store for us this time around? More phenomenal callbos? Mary J., Santana, John Legend, Maxwell were all featured on her first solo album. Regardless of what she gives... there are thousands if not millions of us waiting to hear.

When I See You...

I put your picture on my mirror... Start to blush when somebody says your name... In my stomach there's a pain... See you walk in my direction, I go the other way
I start to stutter when I speak... Try to stand, but my knees go weak... What's happening to me? In Dark, can you tell me what it means?
I lay my head on my pillow... You got me starring out the window... Wish on a star for a sign... Thats the reason why

-Fantasia, When I See You

It was a pretty normal weekend for me. Never as much sleep as I plan... hanging out with my boys... a few parties... and running into Monet. I first met him on the sands of Condado, Puerto Rico back in May of 2004. From the instant I saw Monet, I was smitten. Beautiful smile, golden skin, as tall as me, and an infectious personality. After watching him play volleyball for what seemed like hours... and joining in for a few matches myself, I quizzed my then bestfriend on who the hell was he.

I only saw him on a few occasions since then but once I moved to Atlanta I seemed to run into Monet quite frequently. And every time I see him, I smile. You know when you find someone that totally embodies your 'type', but you just don't know what to do or what to say. Well after several months of harmless flirting back and forth... I did something I never do. I laid my cards on the table and told him how I felt. As I stood there totally exposed, it seemed to catch him off guard but he finally knew.

Sunday, I ran into Monet again at Dejangos... he gave me the usual customary hug that I have come to expect but this time it was quite more. Apparently the $70 United Colors of Benetton shorts were paying off. (mental note go back and get the brown ones IMMEDAITELY) Later in the night he made an excuse of not being able to dance... as long as I have known him I have never seen him on the dance floor so and I was definitely trying to ummm check his moves. We talked for awhile and exchanged text messages from across the club. As we said our goodbyes our eyes met and I could tell he knew how I was feeling at that moment... with another mentioning of him liking my shorts, Monet was gone.

As I rode home from the club recanting the nights events with my boy... a goodnite text message came across the Treo. Damn I hate it when they know you like them.

Oh Danny

My New Crush

So I have found my new crush. Last year on So You Think You Can Dance it was Ryan Rankin (yo where the hell are you anyway?!?! cause I know you are reading this) and this year it is definitely Daniel Tidwell.

Danny started dancing at the age of 10 and eventually ended up studying at the Kennedy Center at the same time I was an employee. For two years he studied the classical ballet technique with the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington D.C. and he danced in some of Debbie Allen's productions at the Center.

While I think most reality shows are a waste of time (ie: American Idol), I love shows like this and Project Runway which still allow us to see talented individuals have a chance to make it big. And from what I have seen over the past 3 weeks... Danny Tidwell is not only the most attractive but most talented on this show.

Hey Fiddy... Who Cares!!

Yet once again, Curtis is on the attack of Oprah once again. In the July issue of Spin Magazine he stated, "She doesn't ever say anything that anybody from the ghetto is gonna ID with. Take a poll. You go out and find me some young black women who ID with Oprah...She can escape the fact that she's black because she's a billionaire."
And yet once again, by opening his mouth he has shown how ignorant, dumb and irrelevant he really is. First why do people feel that if someone doesn't live up to their expectations, they aren't who they are. In case Fiddy didn't know that are quite a few black people who are not from the ghetto and like me don't identify and can't stand ghettoness. Secondly, Oprah's financial standing has no bearing on her race. Any time you turn her show on, you and everyone else will see she is quite black. Thirdly, there is quite a lot about Oprah anyone from the ghetto or anywhere else could identify with:

1. Oprah is from a small town in Mississippi where she learned to read aloud and perform recitations at the age of three... how many of us were reciting Easter speeches at an early age.

2. She attended Tennessee State University, where she majored in Speech Communications and Performing Arts... how many black people attend HBCUs and other colleges each year.

3. Her mother, father, and grandmothers were all working class citizens... how many of our parents have worked daily to put food on the table.

4. Oprah's commitment to children also led her to initiate the National Child Protection Act in 1991, when she testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee to establish a national database of convicted child abusers.

5. Oprah's Book Club has promoted so many authors and gotten so many people to read actual literature... more than what anyone can say about the lyrics of any 50 cent rap.

My point is just because Lady O's show doesn't cater to the ghetto doesn't make her less black. And if you don't like her show don't watch it or start your own that does cater to the ghetto. But Fiddy's relentless attacks on a woman that has done so much for the victims of Katrina, the girls in Africa, and the students at Morehouse are becoming apparent for what they are, a quite sad and desperate grasps for media attention for the soon to be released what is being rumored to be an awful album. Curtis you and your thoughts are irrelevant... but I guess that damn free speech amendment means we must tolerate you.

Why R. Kelly Needs to Go to Court...

Back into 2003, Genarlow Wilson, a former high school football star who became a national symbol for the extremes of getting tough on sex offenders, was sentenced to 10 years in jail from receiving oral sex from a 15 year old when he was only 17. Well yesterday a judge ordered Wilson to be released and called his mandatory 10-year sentence for consensual teen sex and his future listing on the child sex offender list "a grave miscarriage of justice." Wilson, the once homecoming king of his school, has served more than two years of a mandatory 10-year sentence for aggravated child molestation, was captured on videotape having consensual oral sex with the 15-year-old girl in 2003. (sound familiar)

Unfortunately for Genarlow and his family and friends, Georgia's attorney general announced he would appeal, a move that will keep the honor student behind bars for now and possibly for a few more months.

Since his imprisonment, his family and supporters have had a new law passed called the "Romeo and Juliet" law. This new Georgia law would have allowed him to avoid the sex offender registry and only face one year of jail time. While some supporters, including former President Jimmy Carter, have said it raised questions about race and the criminal justice system. Opponents of Wilson's release said it could open a floodgate for other cases. Georgia prisons currently hold 189 inmates who were sentenced for aggravated child molestation when they were 21 or younger. Of those, 56 percent were white and 44 percent black, state figures show.

"If this court or any court cannot recognize the injustice of what has occurred here, then our court system has lost sight of the goal our judicial system has always strived to accomplish ... justice being served in a fair and equal manner,"Judge Thomas H. Wilson wrote, who is no relation to Genarlow Wilson.

While Genarlow has spent 2 years for being a minor having sex with a minor, our dear friend R. Pissy celebrates 5 years of being free last week. It was five years ago today that a Cook County grand jury indicted R&B superstar R. Kelly on 21 counts of child pornography for allegedly videotaping himself engaging in sex acts with an underage girl. The girl, who allegedly was 14 years old when the tape of her and Kelly was made, will celebrate her 23rd birthday in September. In those 5 years, Michael Jackson was charged, tried and acquitted of child molestation charges; Martha Stewart was charged, tried, convicted and served her sentence; and Lil Kim also was convicted, served her sentence and shot a reality TV show about her ordeal for BET.

"It's ridiculous that it has taken five years to get to trial," said New England School of Law Professor Wendy Murphy. "There's no excuse for it. But this is a tried-and-true tactic when it comes to sex-crimes cases: 'victory by delay.' Witnesses end up moving away. They die. You tend to see a lot of delays for defendants who are wealthy. You don't tend to see a lot of delays when the defendant is a poor kid from the inner city."

Too bad for the Genarlow Wilsons of the world because there is truly two judicial systems in the world.

Friends vs. Acquaintances

So as I was leaving the gym the other day, looking for my gym in the parking deck (how I forgot where I parked it at just a few hours earlier, I can't explain), I was approached by this mid 20s female and was like aren't you Chris' friend. She then jogged my memory and reminded me that we had met at a dinner party a couple months ago and then went into 20 questions about how Chris was doing. I had to stop her because, while me and Chris are cool we were only acquaintances and have only hung out a few times.

So I had lunch last week with two of the few black people that work in my building and the topic of friendships came up. After listening to their stories... I asked a simple question that made everyone go quiet for a few minutes. Are these people we are discussing friends or acquaintances?

I must say that I tend to use the word very loosely... but I know and recognize the real meaning. And for me there are three levels of friendship: Friend, Confidant, and Acquaintance. Now an acquaintance is someone you hang out with from time to time. They are often confused with friends cause you are often seen out and about together. A confidant is a step up from an acquaintance, not only do you hang out with this person but you actually share more of yourself, your secrets, and your aspirations with this person. And of course a friend is the top tier of friendship. For me a friend has no restrictions on the length of time that you know them, but it is more about not only knowing me and my secrets, not only being someone I enjoy hanging out with, but also it is about being someone you can depend on and whose opinion I seek out and trust. For me a friend compliments what I lack and not only sees what I need before I ask, but offers to help me meet that need.

I have had very few friends in my life time. Some confidants. And endless number of acquaintances. Here in Atlanta... I only have two friends (there were 3 but such is life). There is my girl, Tracee, that I have known since freshman year at Auburn and Damian, who I have known since my first summer living in DC. I have a couple confidants (with Larry being my favorite LOL).

I know you have read throughout the two years this blog has been around about a few people I have hung out with that are no longer around... those were acquaintances and for me those are the ones you often either outgrow quickly or your time together just seems to dwindle for other reasons in life. While I usually enjoy the company of the acquaintances when they are gone there is usually no heartache or missing. It is one of those situations where you enjoy it while it lasts and move on afterwards. Now friends are the only ones I truly have ever miss, I think you share so much of yourselves it is like loosing a part of yourself when they are gone. But I guess you take what you can learn from that person and your experiences together and let that make you a better person and eventually move on.

So what are you a friend or an acquaintance?

Another Church Experience...

I know I haven't blogged recently about my church experiences but don't take that as me being a total heathen. Since first blogging about my experience at Elizabeth Baptist Church in the Cascades area of Atlanta, I have been attending faithfully. And telling all of my friends about how moving and spiritually uplifting the services have been for me.

Unlike some ministers, Pastor Craig Oliver delivers his message in a bible study format. He tends to pull the message from one chapter instead of how others crisscross the bible piecing together verses from one book to the next to fit the message they are trying to deliver. Over the past two Sundays, four friends have attended with me and all have agreed to return the next week with me. And each time the message has moved my friends to tears. Don't you just love it when the message hits you!!

Two weeks ago while the Pastor was ministering in California, Elizabeth featured a early 20something speaker who attends the church. Being new to EBC I can't remember his name but it was good to see the church embrace their younger members and allow them to use their gifts. By the way his message was just as powerful as Oliver's usually are.

The church has three services on Sunday, 7:30am, 9:30am and one at 12noon. While my church tour of Atlanta hasn't ended... I am definitely going to pause and continue to enjoy Elizabeth a little while longer.

His Story is 2

So His Story is turning 2 years old today. From DC and now from ATL... from the pages of the Southern Voice to the CoCoDorm website... my writings, my thoughts, my life... my HisStory have been shared with many. The Google Analytics of this site still seem to amaze me. But in honor of 2 years here are some of my favorite posts:

From June 2005... Romance is Dead
From September 2005... Katrina... 3 days Later
From December 2005... Premonition or a Dream

From March 2006... Why Are You Still Single
From June 2006... The List
From August 2006... Must I Date Your Friend Too
(cause this one is still causing friction)

From December 2006... Lessons Learned
(a must read if you haven't... especially if you are in ATL)

From January 2007... Another Great Weekend
From March 2007... Another MLK Month has Come and Gone

Random Thoughts on Celebs...

Why is Ray J still relevant? I mean even his once super popstar sister barely makes the news with her manslaughter and civil cases. But this irrelevant boy who hasn't had a musical hit in years... if ever... and awful acting helped end that even more awful UPN show. But out of desperation of maintaining a public image he releases a sex tape with Hilton wannabe Kim K (who is now supposedly dating LaMike... you know her Armanian father is loosing his mind) and makes public appearances with Whitney... and all of sudden he is everywhere. Please sit down.

Guess who??? Yep that is Schatar Taylor aka Hottie from VH1's 'Charm School' and 'Flavor of Love.'

Angela Bassett has to be one of my favorite actresses ever. I am still pissed that Halle got an Oscar before she did, no slight to Halle cause I love her too but Angie is just a better actress. Not only talented but absolutely gorgeous as well. I am definitely looking forward to her new movies, Gospel Hill and Touissant. She never gets the acclaim she deserves.

Why are people up in arms so much about the Eddie Murphy baby momma drama when all he said was that he wanted a paternity test.

Did anyone really believe Akon was 25? When I saw this in Rolling Stone... I laughed. I mean I know people lie about their age but could his people at least come up with something believable? Too bad his child humping antics (which I still do not think is his fault) brought about his prison records which show he is well into his 30s.

In totally true utter nonsense... Shar Jackson gets a tv show based on being Kevin Federwho's ex?!?! Are you fucking serious? I mean Shar use what you got to get what you need but based on being a nobody's ex?

Even though Nick Cannon got the Breakthrough Award in Cannes last week... I think it should have gone to Queen Latifah. This woman has evolved so much in front of our eyes. From U.N.I.T.Y. to the Dana Owens Album... from House Party 2 to Hairspray... she has definitely crafter her career and image well.

Why hasn't R Pissy gone to court yet? Everytime I hear him on my radio it begins to annoy me. Whether he gets off or goes to jail... I could careless. I just want him to have his day in court immediately.

You all know I love Oprah... God knows I do... but this picture is... well has left me speechless.

Don't Ask... Don't Tell

I haven't donated blood since I was a senior in college (which was just a couple of years ago... honest). So it came as quite a surprise this morning as I was doing my daily reading of the Post, Times, and CNN News, to find out that homosexuals have been banned from giving blood since 1983.

Regardless of your HIV and other STD status, the FDA does not allow men who have ever had a sexual encounter with another man to donate blood, saying they are at increased risk of infection by HIV that can be transmitted to others by blood transfusion. Although the Red Cross and two other blood groups criticized the policy as "medically and scientifically unwarranted" and offered the solution of waiting at least one year since their last homosexual encounter, the Food and Drug Administration continues to uphold their decision. In March 2006, the three groups told the FDA that new and improved tests, which can detect HIV-positive donors within just 10 to 21 days of infection, make the lifetime ban unnecessary.

This was all a shock to me because I have been asked to donate several times and have never been asked if I was homosexual. The last time I did donate blood... that was never asked nor did I see it on any form I filled out.

While critics of the policy said it bars potential healthy donors and is discriminatory, the FDA admits the policy defers many healthy donors but rejects the suggestion that it discriminates against gays.

According to CDC estimates, heterosexual contact led to about one third of new AIDS diagnoses and one third of new HIV diagnoses in 2005. I totally agree that there should be some safety precautions taken... but isn't and shouldn't all blood regardless of who it comes from tested before it is given out?

Compared to my past, there is very little on TV that I watch on a regular basis. And most of the shows I watch only come on for part of a season like Prison Break and Project Runway. But each week there are two shows that I have to see with out interruption from phone calls or IMs... and those are Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives.

I rarely blog or write about TV but after watching last night's Desperate Hos I just couldn't resist. The season finale had to be the best show of the entire season. Of course there were a few yawns... this season still doesn't compare to the first two. The whole Mike and and Susan getting married... yawn. The return of Bree with that new story line surrounding her hoish daughter and the baby, reminded me of something that my Aunt Marie would probably do. The lies, the lust, the sex between Victor, Gabby, and Carlos.... And the final sweet justice for that conniving Edie was just not what I was expecting at all.
This episode was like wow to me... did you see it?

Poor little Jennifer

"DREAMGIRLS is a fascinating look inside the 60’s music industry. Jennifer Holliday reprises her Tony Award-winning role as Effie, the troubled star of a legendary female singing group in Michael Bennett’s dazzling, highly-charged musical about the cost of fame. Filled with showbiz glitz and glamour, romance and heartbreak, the musical features songs such as “Dreamgirls,” “I am Changing,” “I Miss You Old Friend” and Effie’s signature song, “And I’m telling You I’m Not Going.” - taken from the National Black Arts Festival website

The Culture of Boys

Last night a date and myself ventured over to Landmark Midtown Cinemas to see Q. Allen Brocka's Boy Culture film that I had been reading about for the past few months. Usually these white washed dramas do not interest me but everyone knows I am in love with Darryl Stephen's lips and will do just about anything to see them again. (especially now that Logo sent Noah's Arc apackin'... has anyone heard anything about the alleged movie yet???) Anyway back to Darryl's lips... I mean Boy Culture.

The movie is the candid confession of "X" played by Derek Magyar, a quite successful male escort. After several years of escorting, "X" gets romantically entangled with his two very different roommates and a reclusive elderly client. While one roommate is trying not to fall for "X", the other is doing everything... to get him (and when I say everything wait till you see the bedroom scene... hilarious) However before the old man will agree to sex, he tells an unsetting love story spanning fifty years over a number of dates paying after each one. He also refuses to sleep with the escort he is paying until he actually desires the old geezer. In the process daring "X" to try feeling emotions which he hasn't felt in years and teaching him about pursuing love with one of his roommates.

The movie is very gay film festival... indy feeling. However there were some interesting performances throughout the 90 minute film. Unfortunately the acting of Jonathon Trent, who plays one of the roommates, was not one of them for me and was rather blah. (But then again I haven't been around any twinkish boys since I worked at the Kennedy Center so it might have been right on) The emotional turmoil that Magyar goes through is believable and delivered quite well. And Darryl brings a masculine and real persona to his character, Andrew. Quite a different role from Noah... and quite good to see that he can play other type of roles.

Overall the movie provides quite a few laughs. And you may notice parts of yourself in some of the characters or at least vibe with some of their experiences. Not a must see... but definitely something you can do one evening or Saturday afternoon.

Dinner with Luda

So last night I was the guest of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation at the 4th Annual Ludacris Foundation Benefit Dinner here in Atlanta. The dinner was followed by a Casino Night After-Party.

Contrary to the one sided image of hip hop that the media portrays, The Ludacris Foundation provides a complete approach when it comes to community service by not only providing monetary support, appearances but also by donating time in the communities. Since 2001, The Ludacris Foundation has donated financial support to grassroots organizations that work to help youth, as well as invested 7,000 hours in devoted service to young people across the nation. The many programs in support of the Foundation have impacted over 7000 lives.

I remember back in the day when Chris Bridges was on Hot 107.9 rapping for the promos and djing in the evening. It is great to see his career actually unfold and develop, and at the same time he hasn't forgotten his community along the way. He definitely needs to be recognized for his diligent work with youth and the community, especially when so many celebs are starting foundations as tax shelters and not really doing much work.

With all the hard work that the foundation has been doing, it is unfortunate that last night's event didn't live up to the price tag. As a special event consultant, I always walk in looking at events to see what ideas and lessons I can walk away with. The lesson here was Roberta Sheilds, President of the Foundation and Luda's mom, needs to fire their event planner. The theme for the evening was Karma (for the literal translation and being Luda's daughters name). However the theme which should have been carried throughout the event was left merely at the hostess in robes that were supposed to be kimonos and an Asian musician playing a guitarlike instrument as people moved from the reception to the dinner. The silent auction lots were still being displayed as we milled around the reception surrounded with black drape. The food was not Asian inspired... and undercooked. The comedy of Bruce Bruce was long, boring, and unoriginal. The two no name acts were... well lets just say I see why they are no names. Bobby Valentino was a disappointment as well. He came out and apologized for his recent single not being appropriate, and instead did a Babyface cover. Hard to believe that he doesn't have one song on his new album that wasn't about sex, drugs, or some other nonsense. (Did I mention he is short as HELL... 5'5" at most). And the choice of the Apparel Mart as a venue was not quite well thought out.

The Foundation honored Bishop Eddie Long, Radio One maven Cathy Hughes (so underwhelming to be so wealthy) , and Hip Hop Icon and Mogul Russell Simmons for their work in the community and success in their industry. Not only were those three in attendance but Star Jones and Al "How You Doin" Reynolds; Alonzo and Tracey Mourning; CeeLo or Gnarles Barkley or whomever he is this month; Kevin Lyles (very personable... I like him) ; Ben Chavis; Chingy and several others that I just can't think of right now.

Overall the event was to raise money for the foundation and to uplift people that are doing good work so for that I enjoyed it... but please fire your event manager because they did a disservice to all the good work your organization is doing.

Random Thoughts

I wonder how much more will Bush fuck up this country before his time is up.

Now that the Dems are back in power… I notice my friends that have been working as consultants in Iraq for the past few years are making their plans to return by the end of the year.

So now that the Innocence Project has cleared 200 people from death row that were wrongly convicted… don’t you think we should really reexamine our judicial system.

Seeing that R. Pissy is still walking around free… don’t you think we should really reexamine our judicial system.

I hate when grown ass people can't own up to their mistakes. So now that Paris is on her way to jail (sure mommy Hilton is a lil unhappy about that) she is blaming (and has since fired and rehired) her publicist for not explaining the terms of her probation to her. First the silly ho should learn for legal matters talk to an attorney not a PR person. And second she should be firing her attorney not her publicist because if Kimora Lee, Snoop Dog can get off without seeing any jail time for drugs and guns... a little DUI should have been a breeze.

Who will get the last laugh Imus, CBS, or Al and Jesse… although Imus was only 4 months into his 5 year contract when he was fired, he is now suing for the rest of his $40million contract.

I am hoping that Oprah and the Color Purple make a stop in Atlanta… before her plans on taking the trip to South Africa. I saw it back in 2005 right after it opened and wouldn’t mind seeing it again with the new cast additions.

What brilliant person decided on the three editions of Dreamgirls DVD. There is the (1) just the movie version; (2) movie with a good ole punk dance cd; and (3) movie with bonus feature dvd… but yet no option to get the DVD, bonus feature dvd, and CD all together. And they wonder why people copy and download music!!

For awhile I have had a jaded view of death… it is a part of life and everyone will experience it. But since my maternal grandparents have began distributing their assets and making their wishes known, I am kind of becoming more afraid of death.

How upset am I that Janet Jackson has made 2 appearances at the Jungle night club that sits right across a creek from my 2nd floor balcony… and I DIDN’T KNOW!!

Speaking of... Janet, Jilly from Philly and Medea…guess we will have to wait till October to see this.

Can someone please slap the shit out of Beyonce and tell her to NEVER, EVER do this again. CLICK HERE.

Ok I am over the whole Cocodorm story... that was last week's topic of discussion lets move on to the next.

We are well into the second quarter of the new year… have you made efforts to make this year better than the last.

To think I created this blog just to be able to post what was in my thoughts, things I thought were interesting, and what was going on in my life. In the past 2 days since posting the link to NBC 6 news story on CocoDorm and Flavalife I have been told by a friend that I was “irresponsible”… the Cocodorm website says I am a “self-proclaimed black gay leader”… and in an email I have been denounced as "starting and spreading vicious untruths" about their organization. If you take 15 seconds and read what I posted on Tuesday the only thing you will see is:

1. A humorous jab at the boys of Cocodorm as “can’t get it up”… anyone that has seen any of their work knows a lot of times the boys in the videos have quite a hard time staying erect… as an owner of several bootleg copies of Flavalife videos and downloads I can attest to this.
2. You will see two links one to the very annoying and dragging preview of the news story and another to the actual news clip.
3. The third thing you see is a link to the Cocodorm website, expressing their response to the entire situation. Which contains a jab at me and HisStory. As well as a jab back at their attempt at a press release.

As you see unlike others that were targeted on their website, I not only posted the NBC 6 side but also the Cocodorm side. Also unlike others I never made a long soliloquy about the detriments of unprotected sex, the Chicago Health Department or how the website/organization should be shut down. As for being irresponsible, I have been quite responsible by posting both sides and not altering or moderating any comments posted. Some may need to be reminded this is a personal blog… there are no ads or claims to be a part of the media, so I have no duty to anyone to be “responsible”.

As for the comments section I have never moderated comments on my blog, not even when they have been negative about me. We can not control what others say but yet we can express our own opinions and hope our side of the situation is seen. I am actually happy that several past and present Cocodorm models have posted comments expressing their stance and defending their organization and would be quite happy to hear from the owner of Flavalife. Last night one of my very own comments was pointed out to me as being negative and bashing. And to that I say please read my entire comment.

"While I personally have no idea why anyone would want to do porn or be on a live web show, I believe it is their decision to do that and respect that decision."

While I do feel I was wrongly targeted on their website as “denouncing the CocoDorm and the models, implying that our models have STD's and are practicing unsafe Sex.” I have never claimed or even remotely had the desire to be a "gay black leader". Like I have said before this is my space on the web and I feel that if and when I do decide to post my thoughts on the situation… it will be just that my thoughts, which I believe I am entitled to.

And for full disclosure I own several bootleg copies of the Dorm Life and Raw Thugs series. And I once subscribed to Cocodorm.com and Thugboys.com for one month each.

Cocodorm at it Again

Well the can't get it up boys of Cocodorm are in the news again... didn't take long after they were banished from Chicago to make the local news in South Florida with this news story, The House Next Door

NBC 6 South Florida News Story

(Please note the first 2 minutes are quite painful...
but it is the last 30 seconds of the clip you need to see)

Update: Click here for the entire News Story

Update: View Cocodorm's response In their defense "Cmack, Alex Flex and Breion secured over a half a dozen signatures on a petition from neighbors in support of CocoDorm." So 7 neighbors want them around!! They really need to hire a PR person before they start releasing press releases.

Past Blogs:

So what’s new in my life…

I have definitely been on the grind as far as a new job. Two weeks before my birthday I said a prayer and asked for some form of direction, to my utter disbelief the next morning I woke up knowing exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to use my several years of nonprofit and fundraising experience to assist individuals and companies decide where to do their philanthropic endeavors. So I have been meeting and talking with people working in Community Affairs and Corporate Responsibility… I am not only praying and hoping but putting in some work to make this my reality.

I have also recently been working with a local celebrity and his foundation. I always thought that most people set up foundations as a tax shelter for their money, but recently at a golf clinic for kids I was able to see his real passion and drive for what he does. That alone made my commitment to the organization worth while.

Since the truck has been paid for the upkeep and maintenance has been kicking my ass. New tires, alignments, new air bag modules… it is like my car note didn’t go away and got a little more expensive. I think I will be leasing the E320.

Two good friends will be moving down in the next few weeks… one from the DC area and the other formerly of DC but now living in NY. I am glad my friendship base here in Atlanta can expand with familiar people.

As for the love life… I can’t really complain. I mean I could but I won’t cause it is what it is. To be single and in a major city allows so many possibilities. And I will say it has been quite interesting lately. There was one guy a student at Clark… nuff said real nice guy but toooooo young. Then there is a blast from my past… a friend from New Orleans that I have known for about 3 or 4 years, but I don’t think he is ready for anything serious, so we will continue to hang out as friends. Then yesterday there was a late afternoon date with a guy I met while out. I never really gave him much thought, seeing I became familiar with him when he was kicking it with another ATL blogger. Being he wasn't my usual type, he wasn't what I expected a really nice guy that had decent conversation and he seemed to understand the "only child, spoiled" syndrome I suffer from. But most surprising is I met a guy while out and about, what was meant to be just friends has developed into me really liking this guy. For the most he is intelligent, funny, artistic, deep, and o so attractive, however I am sure he has some issues as we all do. How do you tell a friend he could be a date without making things feel weird.

After a recent conversation with Dominican, two unecessary emails, and a couple of comments... I felt the need to repost this.

Big Brother is watching...
I never really pay attention to the statistics of visitors to my page but this week I have found out that more people are visiting my page and reading my thoughts than I would have imagined. Earlier this week I got a Yahoo IM from a friend of a friend... who commented on a recent post I had made. This totally took me by shock, because I would have never assumed that he even knew I had a blog.

Then today my bestfriend back in DC calls me to inform me someone was asking about comments to my blog and also inquiring why there are no pictures of him from the White Attire Affair. This too took me by shock. I had told him awhile back that I blogged but I never knew he would read it or even the person that called him about it.

The first thing that came to mind was.... O shit what have I been blogging about. Well at first thought, I was at ease because I always change the names of most of the people I blog about to protect their privacy. Then I remembered the original reason of why I started this blog... as somewhat of an extension to my personal journals. Like the title of the blog says this is about my writings, my thoughts, my life... so now I must make a conscious effort not to censor my postings knowing that my readership extends far beyond what I originally imagined.

And to those I know if you ever read something that moves you in some way, there is always the comments section... but just remember my writings... my thoughts, my life... my HisStory

Please Not Again...

So the negroidian nonsense is back... in less time it took for Tiffany Patterson aka New York to apply those awful fake eyelashes, she is back with I Want My 3 Minutes of Fame Love New York 2 with those two bowling balls sitting on her chest.

And just in case you didn't think the participants were gay enough on the first series... the I Love New York 2 website is allowing people to post their photo and collect votes "The top five misters with the most votes will be vying for New York's affection on television in I Love New York 2." But the gag is look at the top 5 so far!!

Unfortunately I didn't watch the entire series just the first episode and a few minutes of the series reunion... but seeing I know a couple of the top contenders on this website, I may have to start watching this time around if they get on.
