So I finally saw the remake of The Women. Since I loved the original and love Jada so I had to see it. I won't go through a long critique of the movie but I will say that it really impressed me to be a remake.
It is rare that remakes adapt to current times but stay true to the original movie; but the writer/director Diane English were able to accomplish that. From the names of the characters... down to the fashion show sequence Diane played great homage to the original 1939 classic film.
However Jada's depiction of a lesbian in 2008 was quite disappointing and quite cartoonish. (And I know we are all thinking if anyone can play a lesbo Jada would be able to pull it off) The whole sitting like a a construction worker... the dating a trite less than super model... the awful choice of a lesbo restaurant.... made me wonder does English even know or tried to know any gay people before altering the original script to include this.
While by far not a great movie... definitely a good and entertaining movie, that I enjoyed this past Sunday evening.

man....i wanted to see 'the women' this weekend, but my friend opted to go see 'the family that preys'. let it be stated from here and days to come, that i am no fan of tyler perry. i actually have quite a disdain for him and his idea that pushing mediocre product on black people is acceptable. but that is neither here nor there.
i will say that like how you described 'the women', 'the family that preys' was not a great movie, but definitely entertaining. i think i probably would've enjoyed 'the women' much more, but 'the family that preys' filled the palette for my sunday evening as well.
i still need to see the original...maybe that will be this weekend.
i saw the movie last night... pretty much agreed with you a good movie to see not great.
sometimes it read as a ad for Saks actually thought about you when the woman told the lil girl nobody hates Saks...
and Jada's lesbian was not believable at all!!!
The WOMEN has received universally BAD reviews from movie critics: see the New York Times and New Yorker magazine reviews. The New Yorker critic singled out Jada Pinkett-Smith as being especially bad. What movie did you see?
anonymous... like assholes everyone has an opinion.
